As a guy who been to cambodia several times in the last 3 years i think i can give some advise to future visitors to this beautiful country.my general advise is beware of the ripped off person you will defenitely encounter.the business people in this country from moto driver to hotel owner will try to make as much money as they can from you.agree beforehand the fare before you jump into any moto or car ,fail to do so you will be charge unthinkable amout once you arrive at your destination.the taxi driver at the airport will ask you how many times you been to cambodia, tell them you been here before.they will almost likely offer to take you to their chosen hotel as well as offer to take you for sightseeing.always be firm but polite.
sisowath quay
this is by far the famous and the best view you can get in phnom penh.it is situated in front of the mekong river.the street is full of fancy restaurants ,small hotels, bars, massage parlours and convinient shops.the street also consist of several small alley which i think offer better value for money yet still so close in fact only a few steps away from the quay.it is also pretty comfortable for family because the prostitution here is not as bold as other places and only limited in closed door bars and massage parlours.Stay at the foreign run hotels because i think its better value than local run places.for example red fox bar and guesthouse which only usd15 complete with balcony,tv,fridge and hot shower. For usd50 you can stay at the legendary foreign correspondant club(FCC) which dated back before khmer rouge era and offer fantastic view from their rooftop bar as well as good selection of delicious food.Another good hotel i think is river star hotel, ask for the highest floor room and since it is local hotel they will quote you higher price first before you bargain.walk away if they want more than usd25.remember the usd25 is for the best room the had.Never take a tuk-tuk for a night out because they only know local scene which popular among locals. At river star hotel you can rent an old mercedez with driver for usd5 an hour.always bargain first especially if you like it for pretty long time.
siem reap
the best place to hangout with a budget is none other than a street along old market area.its full of western restaurants and cheap hotels.the nightlife scene is also around the corner.
